Hi and welcome. My goal in this series of articles and posts is to combine 30 years of product development experience with the often neglected and hidden aspects of personal success psychology. From a product psychologist’s point of view, its the alignment of both the PRODUCT and the PERSON that create real, long term product success.
Estimates are that about 95% of all new products and programs fail. Most people blame this on the product side of things, whether it did not fulfill a strong consumer need, lacked an innovative point of difference in the market place, was marketed incorrectly, or perhaps failed because of poor financial planning or an inadequate business model.
But there’s another side of product success. It’s the individual, people or person side. This side contains the qualities of vision, passion, psychological well being, balance, purpose, preparation, productivity skills, time management, and conscious self reflection and awareness. These factors reside both in the individual and in the product development team. This is the side of product success where “hidden” saboteurs sit in the dark corners of our minds, unexposed and silent until the full spectrum of what it really takes to develop a successful product is revealed in real time.
I hope you find both encouragement and enlightened caution in sharing Product Success Psychology with me.
Respectfully,
Dr. Bob: The Integral Product Shrink
